G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

The sequel to the much maligned G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra finally releases after being pushed back from a Summer 2012 release to add 3D and more Channing Tatum.

It’s a fine, fairly generic action film was my first thought. Not particularly good and not particularly bad either. The story picks up straight away with the evil Cobra organisation in control and the ‘Joes’ destroyed and scattered, will they be able to regroup and fight to save the world and overthrow Cobra. I won’t spoil it but a hint would be: most probably.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is thrown into the mix but this doesn’t bring the same positive affects like his turn in Fast Five. Sure the action is good fun, despite the loud and rather annoying music playing during every fight, and some set-pieces, mainly involving Ray Park as ‘Snake Eyes’, are interesting but there is not much substance or story behind the action figures actors performances to make this stand out. It will be remembered for being another 2013 blockbuster and selling a lot of toys for Hasbro and not much else which is a shame in a way.

Of course the ending is not final so we can expect more sequels such as G.I. Joe: Retribution, Returns, Revenge or insert any word beginning with “R” to continue the trend after “Rise” and “Retaliation”. However if this generic film is anything to go on, who cares. If The Rock, Tatum and Bruce Willis were used efficiently this could have been a whole lot better. The first one was quite fun, even rather silly in a good way. This sequel tries to be too serious to its own detriment and rays of hope fleetingly glimpsed with some good ‘The Rock-Tatum’ chemistry are quickly extinguished; rendering this is as an entirely forgettable chapter in the G.I. Joe history books.
