I Watched… (#20)

Arthur (1981)

Happy and loveable drunk Arthur (Dudley Moore) must marry if he is to keep his vast family fortune. However, he does not love his soon-to-be-wife and falls for a ‘nobody’, Linda (Liza Minnelli), instead. What does fate have in store for this inebriated gentleman?

A classic comedy which ticks all the right boxes. Very funny and effortlessly charming thanks to the oddity and warmth of Arthur, brilliantly played by the Oscar-nominated Dudley Moore. He is drunk for most of the film but but his sheer happiness and playfulness make him the gentlest drunk in New York City.
The supporting cast of Linda and his hilarious butler Hobson (John Gielgud) keep the film ticking along at a good pace with plenty of time for Arthur’s one-liners and Hobson’s dry wit.

A comedy gem that still holds its own over 30 years later – the film may look dated but comedy and charm will always shine through in Arthur.
